Jim O'Donnell

Jim O'Donnell is an accomplished professional in the rail industry, with a robust background in rail operations management, he holds a BSc in Railway Operations Management from Glasgow Caledonian University, complemented by various professional qualifications, including a Level 4 NVQ in Internal Quality Assurance and a certification as a Digital Learning & Artificial Intelligence Learning Specialist.
In his current role, Jim manages driver competency matters, supports HR investigations, and collaborates with safety specialists to standardise assessor performance. He is adept at conducting thorough investigations into operational incidents, providing insights and recommendations to improve safety and efficiency. Jim leads the development and deployment of digital training tools, such as Virtual Reality cabs and Augmented Reality applications, to enhance training effectiveness.
Previously, Jim held the position of Simulator Manager at Govia Thameslink Railway, where he developed simulation learning programs and led upgrades to ETCS simulation modules. His expertise in simulator technology and digital learning methodologies has been instrumental in enhancing training outcomes and operational safety.
Jim's rail industry career is marked by significant achievements, including the testing and commissioning of ETCS Level 2 and Automatic Train Operation on Class 700 trains. Before embarking on his career in the rail sector, Jim spent 17 years in the print industry, supporting various projects related to the transition to electronic workflows, production, and account management. He also held key roles as a Major Account Manager and Strategic Account Executive for FedEx Kinkos.
With professional membership in the Chartered Institute of Railway Operators, Jim continues to drive innovation and excellence in railway operations and training.
